It’s no secret that a good portion of Nova Scotia is of German descent, which is why on Thursday, June 7th (2018), the province will be recognizing German Settler’s Day.
Bridgewater Historian, Peter Oickle, notes the abundance of German Settlers across the province.
“You’ll find that just about every county has settlers who would’ve come out of Lunenburg County and made their way to Shelburne County or Yarmouth, the (Annapolis) Valley, Cape Breton County,” says Oickle.
Oickle says just about 1 in every 10 people in Nova Scotia can identify with their German roots.
A special event to commemorate German Settlers Day will be held at Pier 21 in Halifax on June 7th starting a 5:30pm, with a few guest speakers on hand as well.
“One will talk about the German influence that remained behind in Halifax and then another speaker will talk about the migration from Germany to Halifax, to Lunenburg and beyond,” adds Oickle.
