Level Playing Field Needed Between Rural Municipalities And Towns: UNSM President

The high cost of maintaining infrastructure such as roads and bridges in towns and villages is slowly bankrupting communities. Governments in larger municipalities in the counties however pay considerably less and the President of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities calls that an unfair playing field. Dave Corkum of Kentville says costs should be more equal with the province and feds directing more money toward the smaller municipalities. He says: “Of course, the rural municipalities are saying hold it now, don’t be giving it to the towns and taking it away from us. So, its a situation where we are looking to the province to come up with ways that are fair.” The town of Canso has already been dissolved and Hantsport, Bridgetown and Springhill are aiming toward that. The high cost of balancing budgets with infrastructure costs ballooning are largely to blame. Corkum says many other towns are also feeling the financial squeeze.
