Liberals introduce bill to ban energy drinks for youth

Liberal leader Iain Rankin is introducing a bill that would make it illegal to sell energy drinks to kids under the age of 16 in Nova Scotia.

The legislation is similar to a Quebec bill dubbed “the Zachary Miron act”, which was named for a 15-year old boy who died from drinking a can of Red Bull in combination with ADHD medication.

“Energy drinks are marketed as a quick boost, but for kids and young teens, the amount of caffeine in a single can can be a lot more than they should be consuming,” said Rankin.

In a press release from the Liberal party, they say energy drinks can contain significant amounts of caffeine that can have harmful impacts, including interfering with sleep, causing headaches and negatively affects heart health.

Health Canada recommends that children should not consume energy drinks.

“This is a simple, practical step we can take to better protect young people,” said Rankin.
