Liverpool is welcoming its first refugee family from Syria.
Ali Aldeiker, wife Khadijah and their young children Sidra and Bilal arrived in Queens County on Sunday.
They travelled from Allepo after spending a year-and-a-half in a camp in Jordan.
Translator with the Queens Refugee Care Team, Yousef Elbazi, says the family is not used to the cold weather.
“It’s kind of shocking and the weather is awful, though, they feel really welcome and comfortable.”
The family is staying at White Point Beach Resort until Wednesday when an apartment is expected to be ready in Liverpool.
The Refugee Care Team is looking for volunteers and vehicles to help provide transportation to the family.
You can reach the group on Facebook by searching ‘Queens Refugee Care Team’ or contact Sheila Redden-Smith at (902) 350-1734 .
Other families also arrived in Shelburne and Yarmouth over the weekend.
