Liverpool lands another major national curling championship

Liverpool has landed another major curling event.

Curling Canada has selected Queens Place Emera Centre to host the 2027 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship from October 25 to 31.

The event will bring some of the country’s top mixed doubles curlers to Queens County, with the winning pair earning the right to represent Canada at the 2028 World Mixed Doubles Championship.

It will also mark the first time Nova Scotia has hosted the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship.

Curling Canada CEO Nolan Thiessen says Liverpool’s history of hosting major events helped make the decision an easy one.

“When the curling community of Liverpool and Queens County tell us they’re interested in hosting major curling events, we’re always eager to listen and once again they made it an easy decision,” Thiessen said.

Queens Place Emera Centre has built an increasingly impressive curling résumé.

Most recently, the roughly 1,000-seat arena hosted the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials.

It previously welcomed the 2021 Canadian Curling Pre-Trials, the 2019 World Junior Curling Championships and the 2014 Canadian Under-20 Curling Championships.

Region of Queens Mayor Scott Christian says the latest championship builds on that success.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Canada’s top mixed doubles curlers back to Liverpool,” Christian said.

“The Liverpool Championship Host Society and Liverpool Curling have worked tirelessly to establish Queens as a destination for world-class curling.”

The 2027 event will also be a first for the championship itself, with the tournament moving to the fall for the first time.

Fourteen provincial and territorial champions will compete alongside teams qualifying through the Canadian Mixed Doubles Rankings.

Further details on the field and format will be announced later.

Liverpool Championship Host Society Chair Greg Thorbourne says the community’s volunteers are ready to once again welcome athletes and fans from across the country.

“Our community has a proven track record of successfully hosting outstanding curling events,” Thorbourne said. “Our dedicated volunteers are excited to once again come together to showcase Liverpool.”
