Liverpool To Host 2019 World Junior Curling Championships

Liverpool has been tasked with hosting the best junior curlers in the world.

The World Junior Curling Championships will be held at Queens Place Emera Centre from February 17-24, 2019.

It was jointly announced by the World Curling Federation and Curling Canada.

The competition will bring 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams in the under-21 age group to Liverpool.

Host Committee Chair, Greg Thorbourne, says the event will have a big impact in Queens.

“Our preliminary study is around $1.2-million for this area. As it goes on we’ll get better figures and after it’s over we’ll have final figures.”

This is the first time Liverpool has hosted an international curling event but is no stranger to the spotlight.

Liverpool hosted the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in 2014.

More than 140 players, coaches and families are expected along with 200 volunteers over the eight-day event.

The province has committed $100,000 towards the event while the Region of Queens has pre-budgeted $50,000 from its 2018-19 budget.

Canada last hosted the World Junior Curling Championships in 2009 in Vancouver.

This year’s World Junior Curling Championships are being held in Aberdeen, Scotland.
