Lobster Season Gets Underway Saturday In ‘33 And ‘34

After a delay of nearly a week, lobster fishermen from Digby County around to part of Halifax County can set their traps this Saturday. (Dec. 1)

Normally the season starts the last Monday of November which would’ve been Nov. 26.

Those in Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 33 will leave ports at 7 a.m.

That decision was made yesterday morning during a conference call among on port reps DFO, Environment Canada and JRCC (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

A similar call was made this morning for LFA 34, The largest lobster fishery in the province.

Fishermen in that district will head out at 6 a.m. to set their pots.

As always Mother Nature calls the shots in this fishery.

If winds are too strong or the sea state is unfavourable, then no one goes fishing.

For fishermen, safety comes first.

As lobster captain Lucien LeBlanc told Acadia News…”the lobsters will still be on the bottom no matter when we head out.”
