Local Distiller Expanding With Help Of Federal Loan

The barrels in Lunenburg are bursting at the seams and the federal government is stepping in help out.

Ironworks Distillery just received $160,000 in a repayable loan from Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to aid in their expansion.

MPs Scott Brison and Bernadette Jordan were on hand to announce the funding.

Co-owner of Ironworks, Lynne MacKay says the building is just as important to the Ironworks story as their spirits so moving was never an option.

“The nature of Ironworks is that we are integral to this building. We are integral to this town. Just the very fact that we are called Ironworks, it evokes what has gone on in this bulding since 1893 so, no, we can’t move.”

MacKay says the expansion will create 25 percent more space and allow them to include a new water recycling system.

She hopes work will be complete by the end of this summer.
