Mayors and wardens on the South Shore have had enough.
They feel the rising cost of policing services has become unsustainable.
Joe Feeney, Mayor of Mahone Bay, says they’ve written a letter to Justice Minister Diana Whalen asking for an opportunity to discuss solutions.
“It’s another situation that’s out of our control,” he says. “They, after the fact, say ‘this is what it’s going to cost you.”
Feeney says more than a third of most municipal budgets gets eaten by costs set by the province including a 3.6% bump in the cost for RCMP services this year.
He says the only way to offset that cost is to cut other services, which he says is becoming more difficult.
The letter will be delivered in the next few weeks.
