Local United Way Recognized For Active Leadership

A local not-for-profit group has been recognized for their inclusiveness and accessibility. The United Way of Lunenburg County was given the ‘Active Transportation Leadership Award’ for their ‘Bikes For Kids’ program. Through two years, the program has provided over 130 refurbished or unused bikes to kids that could use them. Coordinator Michael Graves says they’re creating opportunities for kids, one bike at a time. He says, “Independence, self-condifence, healthy lifestyle; those are some of the benefits that a kid will gain by owning his or her own bike. So, the opportunity to explore the community on their own two wheels and be one of the gang, just helps to disspell the stigma of being left out.” The award is handed out annually to groups who make efforts to be active to get from one place to another.
