It took over 500 signatures on a petition, but flags will now be hung over Lincoln Street in Lunenburg.
After a successful first year with nautical flags hanging over Lincoln Street, they’ll soon be flying once again.
Council initially denied the request for the flags to return, but the community pushed back.
Owner of Dots and Loops, Melanie Strong was instrumental in getting the decision overturned.
She started the petition and got the support of other local businesses.
Along with Dots and Loops, Jenny Jib and Down Home Living also sent emails of support to council.
Strong is pleased that council reversed their decision.
“I think that it will add a nice festive touch to the town and I think that people will love it.”
Strong is currently fundraising to pay for the installation.
She says the flags will be there permanently this time, and hopes they will be up within the next couple weeks.
“The petition was the primary thing that I, sort of, presented at the meeting with the 550 signatures in two days,” she says, “I just don’t think that they were aware that there was this much public support.”
Strong says after offering to cover the cost to put up the flags, council voted unanimously to approve the plan.
