People in Lunenburg could soon be paying more for water as council prepares to review a new rate study.
The issue is scheduled to be discussed during a special council meeting Tuesday night.
The study recommends phased increases to residential water rates over the next three fiscal years. That includes an 8.5 percent increase in 2026-27, followed by 9.8 percent in 2027-28 and 7.5 percent in 2028-29.
Commercial customers could see different increases depending on the type of service they receive. Proposed increases range from 8.9 percent to 12.5 percent in 2026-27, followed by increases between 9.4 percent and 10.7 percent in 2027-28, and between 7.0 percent and 7.9 percent in 2028-29.
The report was prepared by consulting firms G.A. Isenor Consulting Limited and Blaine S. Rooney Consulting Limited.
Consultants are expected to present their findings to council during the meeting.
If council approves the recommendation, the Town of Lunenburg would apply to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to change water, fire protection and service rates.
The utility board would make the final decision following its regulatory review process.
