Lunenburg Doc Fest Set To Showcase Films From Around The World

Lunenburg Doc Fest gets underway tomorrow.

The festival, which showcases documentary films from around the world, is in its fifth year.

Pamela Segger, executive director of the festival, says Doc Fest was created by seven film enthusiasts who had no festival experience but were lovers of the genre.

And each year she says it’s grown.

“We had a really robust turn out then and we were a little bit daunted by the fabulous turn out we had and that has just grown year after year, in fact we sell out of our passes every year.”

The event now includes workshops for filmmakers and free screenings for the community.

This year also features a diverse set of films as usual.

“Our opening night film, Kailash, is about a Nobel Peace prize recipient who is serving his life’s mission to save children from slavery,” says Segger.

They also have a family friendly feature this year – Pick of the Litter, which follows the lives of a group of seeing-eye dogs.

Segger expects that one will be a big draw for young and old alike.

Folk musician Catherine MacLellan is performing for this year’s festival as well as being featured in one of the documentaries.

The Song and Sorrow follows MacLellan as she ‘walks in the complicated shadow’ of her late father Canadian song-writer, Gene MacLellan.

Segger says this year’s festival is shaping up to be just as popular as ever – most of the passes are sold out.

She says it’s best to come early for the rush line if you don’t have a pass or ticket.

And individual tickets are being sold until 5 p.m. Thursday but Segger says because they sold so many passes, very few remain.

The festival starts September 20 at the Lunenburg Opera House.
