A family physician from Lunenburg has been named one of Canada’s best in 2016.
David Martell has been a family doctor for 17 years.
He received the Reg L. Perkin award from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
Martell says he’s never won an award before.
“I think it’s quite humbling to be singled out by your peers as doing some exemplary work. I think it kind of makes you feel encouraged to keep doing it.”
Martell is currently working with the South Shore Opioid Committee, which is dedicated to helping patients affected by opioid addiction.
“You know all the hours you put in and all the effort you put in and all the stress you have at the end of the day is worthwhile. Somebody sees the value in it. Not just the patients you see but people who you work alongside who you respect.”
He received a certificate while the Nova Scotia College of Family Physicians also gave him a kaleidoscope – both of which are in his office.
