Lunenburg Looks For Replacement Doctor

About a thousand people in Lunenburg County are suddenly finding themselves without a family doctor.

Patients received word last week Dr. Chemanthi Kalen would no longer be practicing, causing many to scramble.

One former patient says being without a physician leaves her in a vulnerable position.

The 76-year old woman says at her age, she needs to be prepared.

“I’m relatively healthy, but you know when you get to be that age, anything can happen.”

Nova Scotia Health Authority says Kalen left for medical reasons.

They say current staff are covering those effected patients until a replacement is named.

Dr. Crystal Todd from the Nova Scotia Health Authority says people shouldn’t panic.

“The other doctors that are there, the nurse practitioners, everyone [is] pulling in to make sure the patients will have primary care that continues on.”

Todd adds they are actively recruiting for both short and long term replacements for Dr. Kalen’s position.
