Lunenburg Opens A Barrel Of Fun This Weekend

Lunenburg will be in good spirits this weekend.

The third annual Spirited Away festival will be held to showcase distillers from across the province.

Lynne MacKay co-owns Ironworks Distillery in Lunenburg and is one of the organizers of the festival.

MacKay says since they started the number of craft distillers in the province has almost doubled.

“These are craft distillers. They make everything from scratch in their own little venues which are almost always outside in interesting places.”

She says along with the renowned mixologists and great spirits the festival offers, this year there will be a new feature.

“Well, Pete Bradford is a very interesting fellow. He is one of Canada’s very few professional coopers. He takes his fire, on the road, if you will and he will be doing some reconditioning of some of our bourbon barrels.”

By reconditioning, she means setting the barrels alight to refinish them.

MacKay says the flames make it feel a bit like a circus act.

Spirited Away runs from Friday to Sunday.
