MADD Canada Pleased With Nova Scotia Cannabis Legislation

MADD Canada has been keeping a close watch on all the provinces of what they’re doing with cannabis and driving.

And the group likes what they see here in Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia was one of the last two provinces to bring in provincial legislation to deal with drugs and driving.

And the organization’s CEO, Andrew Murie, says it’s is the most comprehensive that they’ve seen so far.

He says province will apply its highway traffic sanctions for alcohol to drugs and driving, including zero tolerance for new and young drivers.

Murie says MADD Canada is still concerned that police still don’t have the necessary tools to enforce the law.

He says that won’t change until federal legislation, Bill C-46, is passed.

“Because a lot of the tools that the provinces and the police need are in that federal bill. Once that’s passed then they can move on it. But quite frankly, for all the province’s and territories, the Senate needs to do their job.”

In Nova Scotia, if police believe a driver to be impaired, they will have the power to suspend the driver’s licence, seize the vehicle and demand a saliva swab or blood sample in order to determine their level of impairment.
