Mahone Bay Awaits Approval From Province For Next Phase Of Wind Project

The future of renewable energy in Mahone Bay is gusting with the town looking to connect more turbines at the Ellershouse Wind Farm.

Mayor David Devenne says they are looking at Phase 3 of the project, which would include four more turbines.

He says a development agreement has been signed by the Municipality of West Hants.

“We’re now dealing with the province around the environmental assessments. That work has been done as well. It is now in the hands of the province.”

The project involving Mahone Bay, Antigonish and Berwick needs approval from the department of environment before new work can start.

Phase 2 wrapped up late last year with three more turbines installed.

So far, seven turbines are operating at the farm.

Devenne says the three municipal units working together is helping them become leaders in renewable energy.

He says projections show the town will get 75 percent of its electrical supply from renewable sources by 2020.
