Mahone Bay To Hold By-Election To Fill Council Seat

Mahone Bay’s mayor is hoping young people in his community step up to the plate in an upcoming by-election.

First time councillor Simone Chia-Kangata tendered her resignation in late December, leaving her seat open.

Mayor David Devenne calls his council an ‘excellent’ group but says Mahone Bay is changing.

“Mahone Bay’s profile is changing and we have to embrace that profile and we can do that by having some younger people in the town stand for council.”

Although the town has one of the largest councils serving a small population, council decided to fill the seat.

Devenne says downsizing isn’t something constituents wanted in the past and fought against it.

He says it’s good to have many voices at the table.

“It brings a bigger cross-section of thought and focus to bear on decisions that have to be made about the Town of Mahone Bay.”

To get more people interested in running, council will organize information sessions on what it’s like to represent the town.

Nomination day is March 13 and the election is set for April 7.
