A home in Martin’s River was severely damaged after an early morning fire today.
The Martin’s River Fire Department was called to the scene at around 4:45 am.
Stuart Hirtle, fire chief for the department, says when they arrived on scene there were minimal flames but they quickly spread.
“There was heavy fire in the basement, the basement is quite charred and burnt.”
The lone occupant escaped and called 911 from a neighbour’s house.
“She was home, she was awoken by the smoke detector and she got her two dogs out and vacated the house,” says Hirtle.
The two story house was severely damaged.
Fire departments from Western Shore, Chester Basin, Indian Point, Mahone Bay, and Blockhouse also assisted in handling the blaze.
Some fire departments were on scene until after 9:30 am.
Hirtle says the fire marshal’s office has been called to investigate.
