Medical education facility has grand opening in Cape Breton

Thursday, May 14 was a significant milestone for medical education and healthcare in Nova Scotia.

It marks the grand opening of the Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) Medical Sciences Building in partnership with Cape Breton University (CBU) and the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine.

This state-of-the-art facility is located on CBU’s campus and will support the medical education of future Nova Scotia doctors.

CBU says these new doctors will serve patients across the province, including rural and indigenous communities.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone. What was once a vision is now a reality that will positively impact the health and communities of Nova Scotians from every region of this great province,” says President and Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall.

He says they are grateful for Premier Tim Houston’s support and leadership on this project.

The CBMC building is equipped with modern simulation labs, integrated classrooms, hands-on learning environments and collaborative learning spaces, which all support faculty delivering quality experiential medical education.

The inaugural class of 30 medical students began their studies at the CBMC in August 2025 with the second cohort of 30 students being welcomed in August 2026.

CBU states the opening of the Medical Sciences Building represents this significant investment in healthcare education, innovation, and community partnership, while underscoring a shared commitment to train physicians in the communities in which they are most needed.
