MODL Calling Straight Pipe Education Campaign A Success

A straight pipe awareness campaign has wrapped up in Lunenburg County.

The Municipality of Lunenburg hosted information meetings across the county which saw about 200 people show up.

Deputy CAO Alex Dumaresq says it’s a good first step.

“Obviously talk doesn’t change water quality,” he says, “but there has to be an understanding of the issue in order for something to change.”

Dumaresq says if straight pipes were removed from the Lahave people will eventually be able to use the river safely.

“Take, for example, Halifax harbour,” he says. “They had no treatment systems in place and their water quality has significantly improved no that they have advanced primary treatment.”

Council is considering applying to the Build Canada Fund for money to help pay for straight pipe replacement.

A decision will have to be made before summer when the application is due.
