MODL Declines Partnership Opportunity With South Shore Lumberjacks

The South Shore Lumberjacks were shutout in their bid to establish a partnership with the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.

The Junior ‘A’ hockey club was asking the municipality for $15,000 this year in exchange for a number of incentives.

Business Manager, Bubby Jackson, says it was a chance for MODL to help the team succeed.

“We felt it was a great way to show the entire community that the MODL believed in us. It was an opportunity to reach out to all businesses and patrons to show that you saw benefit in the economic kickback and community outreach our team brings to the South Shore.”

The municipality mulled giving the team $7,500 before deciding against the partnership.

Councillor Lee Nauss says the municipality is not a bank.

“If a business runs a deficit, I don’t believe they should come to the municipality looking for support to pay their costs to eliminate the deficit.”

A consultant’s report says the economic benefit created by the Lumberjacks in 2016 was just over $657,000.

Jackson says the Lumberjacks are one of the biggest community supporters and the decision is a tough pill to swallow.

The Town of Bridgewater has agreed to the $15,000 request from the Lumberjacks for the 2017-18 hockey season.

Jackson hopes they will get support from other businesses in the community.
