The Municipality of Lunenburg is the first community in Atlantic Canada to go blue.
In a process that began last summer the Council of Canadians presented council with their certification this week.
Mayor Don Downe says they took a pledge to protect water sources and discourage the use of bottled water.
“Water is a very special gift that we all have,” he says, “and we need to make sure that we preserve it in a very environmentally friendly way… and that’s what we will try to do.”
Downe says the municipality wants to make sure they’re protecting what they have.
