MODL Mayor Reflects On His Career

With the municipal election only days away, time is winding down for three mayors who aren’t re-offering on the South Shore.

Don Downe was in provincial politics for 10 years before spending two terms as the mayor of the Municipality of Lunenburg.

In his eight years as mayor, Downe says he’s most proud of how they were able to turn around MODL’s financial situation.

“We’ve gone from having about a $15.50-million debt to now, today, about $6-million. In fact we’ll be debt free in 2022 if the new administration follows the track.

Despite that achievement, there are one or two areas where he would like to have seen more progress.

“Personally, I would have like to have seen some amalgamation, or some tighter fit of joint services,” he says. “It is a lot of government for 49,000 people.”

Downe says he’s looking forward to travelling with his wife and spending more time with his grandchildren.

The new mayor will be sworn in on November 8th.

Joe Feeney of Mahone Bay and Lockport’s Darian Huskilson are also not re-offering.
