It’s a huge step towards cleaning up the Lahave River.
The Municipality of Lunenburg and the provincial government have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
The document solidifies a partnership with the Department of Environment that aims to see the elimination of straight pipes by 2023.
Mayor Don Downe says a lot of the credit has to go to 12-year old Stella Bowles.
“She is the face of this project in so many ways,” he says, “and I can’t think of a better face than Stella’s to be on the front of this because–it’s contagious, her belief in doing what’s right.”
For her part Bowles says this is a huge moment.
But she says she’ll keep testing and wait for paper to become action.
Meanwhile,
South Shore-Saint Margaret’s MP Bernadette Jordan feels confident Ottawa will get on board.
She says the success of this project is good for more than Nova Scotia alone.
“It’s a terrific pilot project,” she says, “This is something other people can look to and say ‘if they’re doing it than why couldn’t we?’ The money is available and I think we should be taking advantage of it.”
Jordan says the health of the Lahave River is an issue she campaigned on.
She hopes federal approval will come soon.
