Good news for residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
Council has approved getting rid of the 2.5 cent special tax rate that’s been collected since 2011-12 to cover costs of the $33.4-million Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.
The municipality is forecasting a $300,000 budget surplus this year based on increased revenues, project deferrals and cost savings.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says they will use part of the surplus to pay down roughly $76,000 and remove the tax.
“So, that’s a considerable tax savings to our taxpayers on their tax bills this year in relation to that. It’s very good news and a commitment that we said we were going to keep and we did.”
The municipality originally planned to have the tax for 10 years but are paying back their $3.85-million cost of the LCLC just over three years ahead of schedule.
The 2.5 special tax rate will no longer appear on bills as of April 1.
