More Calls For Improving Tancook Island Ferry Service

The province’s NDP Leader is joining her Chester-St. Margarets colleague in calling for a new ferry to serve the Tancook Islands. Maureen MacDonald says Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan should make improvements to the service a priotity. She says: “Just because its a ferry, it goes over a body of water, doesn’t mean we can give it second class citizenship. We need to think about this as a road or a bridge and safety concerns.” And she says its a more efficent way of transporting people between the islands and the Mainland. The current ferry, the William G. Ernst, has been in service for more than 30 years. Meanwhile, the province’s PC Opposition Leader Jamie Baillie says a new Tancook Island ferry should be just as much a priority as making Highway 103 safer and creating jobs and the provincial government should take the lead. He tells us: “The best way to insure that we have safe highways and safe and modern ferries that support that South Shore way of life, is by taking steps to grow our economy, create jobs, bring young people home where they can pay their taxes here.” Which in turn, can help pay for a new ferry and improve the 103. Baillie is calling upon the government to speed up the process!
