More Costly Upgrades For Lunenburg’s Sewage Treatment Plant

A new ventilation system will be installed at the sewage treatment plant in Lunenburg.

The cost to the town is more than $230,000.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says some interior air quality complaints have been addressed, but the new ventilation will not take care of everything.

“This particular upgrade to the facility is for the internal air quality and to improve its energy efficient operation. But, it will not address the external odour issues,” said Bailey.

Bailey says fans are currently running to mitigate some of the interior air quality problems, but it’s not proving to be very energy efficient.

The new ventilation system will be installed over the next 14 weeks.

The mayor did concede that while looking at the overall costs of upgrades to the sewage treatment plant over time and the possibility of future expenses could mean considering starting over with a new building. But that remains to be seen.

“There are always going to be odour issues when dealing with sewage. It’s a concern for council when you look at all of the capital upgrades that are required for the operation of the sewage treatment plant. How much of that is particular to our plant and how much is a factor in operating a sewage plant, that is what we’re grappling with at this point. I’m not sure building a new plant would solve our problem.”
