More criminal charges laid in U.S. consulate bomb case in Halifax

Two more criminal charges have been laid against the man facing offences after a bomb threat toward the U.S. Consulate in Halifax over the summer.

Halifax police say the charges for 54-year-old Ali Assakereh include a hoax regarding terrorist activity and commit a hoax terrorist activity.

He appeared in court Friday to face those charges as well as public mischief and uttering threats.

This is in addition to charges laid by the RCMP for a threat against an internationally protected person, which is a terrorism offence.

It was August 9 when police learned of the threat.

The next day, officers allegedly found a vehicle with propane tanks and flammable gas parked in Purdy’s Wharf. In response, police shut down several streets in the downtown core and forced people to evacuate.

Assakereh’s next course case is scheduled for November 2.
