Moses Mountain is, in my opinion, one of the better mountain experiences you can have on the mainland. The trail starts low on the beautiful Avon River, and then climbs up, at first gradually, but steepens as you near the top. The reward? Two different view points high atop rock outcroppings. Here’s an overview of this great mountain trail!

Finding the Trail
The trail is at the Power Dam in Mill Section, about 7 minutes from Martock. Take highway 14 to reach the access road, which can be found using the Google Maps Link below!
Once you turn onto this road, continue past the two houses on your left, but stop before the gate for the power dam. Just before the gate, there is room to park on your right. You’ll see Moses Mountain looming in front of you.
The Hike
From the parking lot, walk past the gate and turn right. Follow the road over the bridge. There are some beautiful views of the Avon River here!
Once across, go left, following the road up stream. After half a kilometer, the road begins to climb uphill, but before it does, there are a couple access points for the Avon River, making it a great spot for a snack or a swim after your hike.
About 800m after the bridge, watch for a small trail on your right going up the Mountain. Usually it’s marked by a rock Cairn and some flagging tape.
From here, it will be just under a kilometer to the summit. The trail gets progressively steeper as you climb, with the hardest part just before the top.
Right before the steepest section is a really cool feature of the trail: a large, truck sized boulder unofficially called Moses Rock. While this could be a glacier deposit, I like to imagine it broke off from the summit many years ago and rolled to a stop there. Either way, it’s a great spot for a photo!
After the short but challenging push to the summit. You’ll be rewarded with an amazing viewpoint of the surrounding wilderness. To reach the secondary lookoff, continue on the trail and cross the mountain’s summit, which plateaus somewhat past this first viewpoint. Between these two lookoffs, you’ll have a 360 view of the land around you.
What I love about this mountain specifically is the size of this rock outcroppings. There’s lots of room to sit, stretch your legs and take in the view!
