Mahone Bay has taken a step in making their streets a little more safe.
The Town of Mahone Bay recently purchased two mobile speed signs which have been placed in strategic spots in town limits.
As you approach the signs, radar calculates your speed and displays it.
Mayor David Devenne says because traffic comes up to the town rather quickly, dropping from 80 to 50 kms an hour.
“They have to be cautious of their vehicle speed because there are pedestrians, there are seniors, there are children, and just people who are out enjoying a walk in the town.”
Devenne says there was concern from council about how quickly the speed limit changes when you hit Mahone Bay and for the many pedestrians the town sees over the warmer months.
He says they’re already seeing a change in behaviour as people approach the signs.
“We are guardedly optimistic at this point that it will have an impact on the way people drive.”
Information on vehicles, speeds, and volume of traffic will be recorded and used by the town and the RCMP to better plan traffic surveillance.
