The MP for South Shore-St.Margaret’s has made history.
By assuming the role of Minister for Rural Economic Development, Bernadette Jordan became the first female Cabinet Minister from Nova Scotia.

Jordan is well known for encouraging women to assume positions of leadership.
She hopes women can take inspiration from this appointment.
“And if you see it you can be it. So I’m hoping it encourages other women to step up and run. I’ve always been a strong supporter of women in politics and women in leadership roles. I hope that people see that this is something that can be done no matter what.”
Jordan says the work that will be done by the newly created Rural Economic Development portfolio will help grow the economy and allow families to stay in rural areas.
Pleased to see South Shore-St.Margaret’s MP @BernJordanMP become our province’s first female federal cabinet minister. As Minister of Rural Economic Development, she will lead a file that is very important to Nova Scotians and I look forward to working with her.

The newly minted Minister missed a family vacation to make history as she was supposed to be flying south today.
“The trip got cancelled. The trip is now to Ottawa, but that’s okay. I brought my family with me to the swearing in. My husband and two of my three kids were able to be here and my sister. So, it was better than a trip to Cuba.”
While Jordan is proud to be the first Nova Scotian woman present at the cabinet table, she says it also shows a lot more needs to be done to get more women elected.
