MPs To Debate Derelict Vessels Motion June 3

The subject of derelict ships will be debated next month in Ottawa.

The MP for South Shore – St. Margaret’s has put forward a motion that will be discussed in the House of Commons on June 3.

There are over 600 derelict vessels in Canada.

Jordan says they are economic and environmental burdens.

“We have to figure out a way that we can deal with it. People are saying, you know, ‘just get rid of them.’ Well, it’s not that easy. There has to be a way to get rid of them. This motion is calling on the government to find a way to get rid of those vessels.

The motion includes identifying owners of abandoned vessels.

And, getting the federal government involved in the process.

Jordan says once the motion is debated, there must be 30 sitting days in parliament before members vote.

She expects that vote may not happen until the fall.
