Municipal Affairs Minister Encouraged By Local Amalgamation Talks

The minister of Municipal Affairs is encouraged by the forward thinking of towns in Lunenburg County.

Mahone Bay recently voted to explore the possibility of amalgamation.

Zach Churchill believes change is coming.

“It’s so important for municipal leaders and our provincial leaders to be forward looking, to have that broad perspective to see where our demographics are going to be in the future and make those structural changes that do need to happen.”

He points to positive impacts of amalgamation when Springhill joined the Municipality of Cumberland County.

Churchill says both residential and commercial tax rates were reduced.

He says the province works as a partner through the process and provides resources to towns if needed.

“We really do believe those outcomes are best achieved when they are done and led by our communities and local leaders because that makes for a much smoother transition with less stress for residents.”

Bridgewater will also hold a special meeting next Monday to consider studying the possibility of amalgamation.
