My Kitchen Fails

I’ve had some spectacular failures in the kitchen over the years.

When I got my first apartment I couldn’t figure out why I was cleaning my oven so often. Being a clueless 20 year old, I took the directions on the frozen pizza literally. It said place the pizza on the oven rack. All kinds of grease and cheese and toppings would melt and slip through the rack and end up on the element below and smoke like crazy. Eventually I got tired of the smoke and cleaning and figured out that I needed a baking sheet under it.

Then one time when I switched frozen pizza brands I discovered, too late, that they had included a round cardboard bottom to the pizza. Smoke alarms went off and that pizza tasted funny.

I’ve never been a fan of automatic dishwashers, but there was one time I was in the midst of refurbishing a number of old computers and had read an article that the older mechanical keyboards could be cleaned in the dishwasher. Well, I had a dishwasher which I never used, so I thought, why not? The only trouble was that I didn’t have automatic dishwasher soap so I used regular dish soap – a lot of it. After the flood my kitchen floor was so clean you could eat off of it.

But my most spectacular fail was the time my son and his friends were looking forward to a barbeque. Somehow, in all my years of living I had never encountered individually wrapped hot dogs in plastic. Maybe I only bought a brand where the weiners were naked. I don’t know. But I cooked those weinies up and put them in the buns and the kids started making faces and saying these hot dogs don’t taste right. Well, of course they didn’t taste right. They were encased in charred plastic. I had to hop in the car and drive to the store and get some more franks that I then peeled the plastic off before putting on the barbeque. Live and learn.

Tell me about your kitchen fails on our Facebook page. I can’t believe I’m not the only person in the world not to notice that round cardboard bottom to the frozen pizza?
