New MRI suite opens at South Shore Regional Hospital

A moment years in the making has finally arrived at South Shore Regional Hospital.

The hospital’s new MRI suite is now open for regular use.

The South Shore Health Foundation says the ribbon has officially been cut on the new MRI machine, giving patients on the South Shore access to the technology closer to home.

The project was made possible through the foundation, support from the Queens General Hospital Foundation, and years of fundraising from donors and volunteers across the region.

Foundation officials say every dollar raised and every hour volunteered helped make the project possible.

The new suite means patients across Lunenburg and Queens counties will have faster access to critical diagnostic imaging without having to travel as far for care.

It is also expected to support earlier diagnoses and better treatment outcomes.

The medical team expects to perform about 3,000 scans in the first year, growing to 5,000 scans in year two.

The foundation says the addition also strengthens the region’s ability to attract doctors and other healthcare professionals to practise on the South Shore.

The project has been described as a community-built achievement that will support healthcare in the region for years to come.
