New Ross Consolidated School has been designated a community school.
The change in designation by the South Shore Regional Centre for Education, means the facility can be used by the community.
Warden Allen Webber of the Municipality of the District of Chester says the surrounding community was already informally using the space but will now have greater access.
“Depending on need of course, our recreation department and the community school coordinator will develop programs, whether it’s art classes, fitness classes, hunter safety courses,”
Webber says this is something the public wanted from the school and will follow a similar model to Forest Heights Community School.
“I think in many respects we’re of the opinion that all schools should be open like that to the community because they are under utilized in the first place.
Public hours start at 2:30 p.m. and end at 9 p.m, pending school activities.
Available space includes the gym, community room, conference rooms, playground, and more.
