New rules for N.S. bar security staff in effect Monday

There are now new rules for bar security staff in Nova Scotia that include all licensed establishments.

In a news release, the province says starting Monday, security staff must have a criminal record check, providing results to an employer, and complete training for safety and how to properly serve alcohol. It will affect about 2,500 bars, restaurants and other establishments.

“These new rules were developed in response to incidents involving bar security employees and patrons,” says the province.

According to Nova Scotia, it makes our province a “Canadian leader” in training and screening requirements.

It was just over three years ago when a patron died outside a Halifax bar after an incident with bar security.

It was Christmas Eve 2022, when Ryan Sawyer, 31, died after an altercation outside of the Alehouse with the security guard. He was found unconscious and later died in hospital.

Alexander Levy, 41, was sentenced to four years in prison for manslaughter.

In 2023, Nova Scotia first enforced new rules for security staff, but they were only for late-night bars known as cabarets.

Not only have the rules expanded to the number of establishments included, there are also fines for an infraction against a liquor license that range from $500 to $10,000.

“Nova Scotians deserve to feel safe when they go out, and these changes ensure there are clear, enforceable standards for those responsible for maintaining order in licensed establishments,” says Minister of Service Nova Scotia, Jill Balser.
