Nova Scotia Heritage Day Recognizes Joseph Howe

It’s Heritage Day in Nova Scotia.

This year’s statutory holiday marks the contributions of Joseph Howe to freedom of the press and his work for the public good.

Howe was a newspaper owner, premier and lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia.

He successfully defended himself in 1835 against libel charges in a landmark case for a free press.

A new Heritage Day flag is flying today at province house in Halifax.
