Nova Scotia Legislature Set To Resume February 27

The governing Liberals have a month to prepare for what will certainly be a controversial session of the legislature.

It’ll be all hands on deck February 27th when the house sits for the first time in 2018.

Government will have to re-write the education act if they wish to follow recommendations from Dr. Avis Glaze’s report on the education system.

The Raise the Bar report has created a stir across the province after the government promised to adopt 11 out of 12 recommendations that came from it.

Included in education expert Dr. Glaze’s recommendations were suggestions to dissolve all of the English speaking school board’s in the province, create a teacher’s college, and remove administrators such as principals from the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.

A review of the province’s forestry practices will also be released in February.

William Lahey, a professor at the University of King’s College, is heading up the independent review.

Lahey previously reviewed the province’s aquaculture practices.

Advocates for Nova Scotia’s midwifery program will be looking for a response to vacancies, particularly on the South Shore.

Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey has promised to speak to the health minister on the need for more midwives after a protest took place in front of his office recently.

And across the aisle the PC Party will come into Province House with an interim leader – Karla MacFarlane, after Jaime Baillie’s early departure due to allegations of inappropriate behaviour.
