Nova Scotia Liberals set for two-candidate leadership race

The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is set to choose between two women in its leadership race.

Lunenburg West MLA Becky Druhan and Richmond County deputy warden Amanda Mombourquette are the two people vying for the job after the deadline to enter the race closed Tuesday.

The party is now poised to elect its first female leader.

Mombourquette made her intentions official in June and held a campaign launch event last week in St. Peter’s.

Druhan was first elected in 2021 as a Progressive Conservative MLA and served in Premier Tim Houston’s cabinet.

She left the PC caucus last October to sit as an Independent.

In May, Druhan announced she was joining the Liberal caucus and said at the time she intended to seek the leadership.

Druhan has yet to formally announce the launch of her campaign.

The Liberals have been without a permanent leader since the 2024 provincial election, when they were reduced to two seats.

Former leader Zach Churchill resigned after losing his own seat in that election.

Since then, Sydney-Membertou MLA Derek Mombourquette and Timberlea-Prospect MLA Iain Rankin have both served as interim leader.

Voting for the leadership will run from November 16 to 21.

The winner will be announced at a convention on November 21.
