Nova Scotian Firefighters Lend A Hand In Manitoba

Around 20 firefighters from all over Nova Scotia boarded a plane to Manitoba this morning.

They’re being sent to help fight a fire that has consumed more than 56,000 hectares of land.

Crew Leader Jamie Brown, from the Queens County detachment says they train for situations like this.

“In Canada we have a great system that we all follow,” he says. “So, we’re all on the same page before we start. So, it’s not much different then going to a fire in our own province.”

Brown says lending a hand to communities in need is the Nova Scotian way.

“It’s just because it’s our nature,” he says. “It’s what Nova Scotians do. We go to help any time we can.”

Brown got the call Tuesday evening and started training on Wednesday.

He says he expects they’ll be camping in tents near the fire for the next several days at least.

The team is scheduled to return in about two weeks.

Three more fire specialists are being sent out tomorrow, this time to Fort Mac.
