NS Info And Privacy Commissioner releases Annual Report

Nova Scotia’s Privacy Commissioner says it will take public pressure to bring access and privacy laws into the 21st century.

Catherine Tully released her Annual Report for 2018-2019 today.

She says politicians need to show courage and determination.

“We show through the cases that we need to do better in Nova Scotia. We’ve worked really hard at improving our efficiencies and our expertise, so we’re resolving four times more files than we used to. We’ve in 5 years received one additional position”

She says last week the Northwest Territories amended its law to give its privacy commissioner order making power across the board.

Tully says through their desire for transparency, accountability and knowledge, Nova Scotians have helped transform the privacy to an influential, dynamic and proactive democratic institution.

She says “The future of access and privacy rights in Nova Scotia depends on us keeping pace with technology and ensuring that our rights are subject to meaningful and effective oversight.
