Number Of Nova Scotians Needing Food Bank Rising

The yearly food bank tally shows a soaring need in this province.

Last year, 44,000 Nova Scotians accessed a food bank at some point during the year for assistance according to spokesperson, Karen Theriault.

Theriault says it’s important to keep shelves stocked because you never know when the need will arise.

“Of those 44,000 people, 70% only needed the food bank’s assistance 6 or fewer times during the year,” said Theriault, adding, “You never know when that time will be.”

Theriault also says people come from all kinds of different circumstances.

“Everyone from working families to singles with employment challenges. They are all struggling in different ways and we’re here to support them.”

“We accept any food item and cash donations, but right now we are looking for a few essentials in key categories.”

“And they are, canned soup and canned vegetables, pasta and cereal.”

The Take A Bite Out Of Hunger charity run takes place today in Halifax at the Canada Games Centre in support of Feed Nova Scotia.

Donations are also accepted at area food banks and participating grocery stores. Cash donations can be made at any time http://www.feednovascotia.ca/
