Nursing Shortages Continue To Hamper Hospital Emergency Departments

The emergency department at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital will reopen at 7:30 this morning.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority closed the ER at 5 p.m. last evening because of a nursing shortage.

Fraser Mooney says the biggest challenge is backfilling sick-leave and vacations.

“We don’t have the casual nurses or part-time nurses available to fill in those shifts.”

The same staffing issue is forcing Roseway Hospital in Shelburne to close its emergency ward at times too.

Mooney says the Nova Scotia Health Authority continues to collaborate with both communities to recruit more graduates to the area.
