Peter Charles Shortt

SHORTT, Peter Charles – Born July 27, 1950, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, who loved him so deeply. Peter lived a life shaped by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep love for working with his hands. He moved through the world with a quiet determination, always learning, building, and willing to lend a hand.

Peter spent a lot of time on the water, where he found purpose. From deckhand to captain, from Theodore Tugboat, to the Mar II to the Coast Guard/Department of Fisheries, he carried a lifelong connection to boats and the people who worked them. He never lost the maritime spirit, helping launch and haul vessels, assisting at marinas, and building boats of his own. Peter also spent years in the world of graphic arts – teaching, designing, managing, and freelancing for magazines, publishers, and print shops across Nova Scotia.

Peter was never defined by a single path. He was a carpenter, a woodcarver, an automotive tinkerer, a stained‑glass artist, and a furniture maker. He framed postage stamps and pictures with care, ran his own small business, and poured creativity into every project he touched. His imagination could turn raw materials into something beautiful.

Peter lived with humility, independence, and an endless willingness to try something new. Quick witted and with a great sense of humour, he believed in doing, in making, and in contributing. His legacy is found in the countless projects that bear his quiet signature.

Of all the roles he held in life, one of his greatest was Uncle Pete. He was always up for an adventure, always ready with a laugh, and a steady presence whose love shaped memories for his nephews and nieces that will never fade.

Peter leaves behind a lifetime of stories shaped by the places he loved, the family home on Edinburgh Street, the days at Grand Lake, and the cherished moments in Sherwood Forest.

Peter is survived by his sister, Linda (and her late husband, Rick), brother, Roy (Margie), nephews and nieces, Mark, Alan, Catherine, Jennifer, Robert, Lisa, Brian, Sean and Eileen, and great-nieces and nephews. Peter is predeceased by his father, Thomas Arthur; mother, Lillian Mabel; and his brothers, Thomas George (Shirley) and James.

There will be no service, and no donations as request by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
