It may have an intriguing name, but the hemlock woolly adelgid attacks and destroys eastern hemlock trees.
And it seems there’s no way to stop it.
Barrie MacGregor lives in Canaan, Yarmouth County along the Tusket River.
He says his front yard is totally forested with 50 per cent of the trees being hemlock.
“We have evidence of the wooly adelgid on some of the trees and I have some trees that are definitely dying and will have to be cut down.”
This Saturday, January 5th, MacGregor and his wife Sandra Phinney are hosting an information session at their home.
Colin Gray from the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute will be there.
MacGregor says they’re looking for paddlers who frequent the Tobeatic and want to learn how to identify the invasive species.
“When we see something, we’ll report it to Colin.”
He says they already have a good number of people who plan to attend Saturday’s session.
It’s free and a lunch will be provided.
It’s from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at #1542 Canaan Road, Canaan, Yarmouth County.
