Students at Park View Education Centre are speaking up about a popular program getting cut next year.
‘Math Study’ is an extra help session where a teacher from the math department is available for anyone who needs assistance.
Grade 12 student, Mikayla Daniels is one of many frustrated by the decision.
“We’re all quite upset and disturbed by the news,” she says, “especially me. I’ve used Math Study a lot, and a lot of my friends have too, and it’s such a great resource to have. So, we were very upset that they were closing it.”
Park View’s student council posted a poll on Twitter to try to prevent the change from happening.
A resounding 92% of respondents want to see the program saved.

The hashtag #SaveMathStudy has also been filling with comments from students past and present who’ve been helped by the program.

Principal Gordon Walters is aware of the displeasure of some students, and says he’s listening to their concerns.
“We can’t underestimate the value of students’ input; their creativity, and what they bring to the table when we’re trying to make decisions. Whether they are decisions about growth or decisions about enrolment.”
Walters says with fewer students they don’t have the resources to offer the program next year.
“We will create a model that’s likely going to look very different than it has in the past. If at some point in time there is an increased student population back at Park View Education Centre we would certainly have an opportunity to revisit it again.”
He adds once next year’s staff is confirmed, they will look at how they can provide the assistance needed for students.
