Parking Meter Rates Increase in Bridgewater

The cost of using parking meters in Bridgewater has gone up.

The town has approved a rate increase from 50 cents an hour to a dollar.

Council made the decision last month and all meters have been recalibrated to reflect the change.

Mayor David Mitchell says the price remains reasonable for residents and visitors.

“People need to remember that a dollar an hour means $0.25 for 15 minutes. You don’t always have to put in a dollar, you can put in a dime or put in a quarter.”

The last parking meter rate increase was in 2012.

The Region of Queens and New Glasgow also charge a dollar an hour for parking.

Mitchell feels parking meters are needed in town.

“We’ve heard from other communities that removed meters and regretted that decision. We’ve seen what happens in our downtown when we removed meters, I mean, it’s an ongoing issue of business owners parking in front of their businesses all day.”

The town estimates revenue from parking meters will increase from $25,000 to $50,000.
